English: “The original” and “originality” are two similar sounding terms with yet entirely different meanings. One denotes something unique, the first piece of its kind while the other stands for ingenuity. As different as the two words may seem at first glance, there still is a hidden connection between them.

On their already sixth album on iD.EOLOGY, Zengineers let their inquiring minds run wild. Carefully they disassemble the originals of various netaudio-artists from Entertainment for the Braindead and Tracing Arcs to Monokle, Dub One! and some others into their constituent parts, analyse their multiple interactions and set out on a search for the soul of the tracks – as well as their own. The erotic elegance of salsa, the cool yearning of independent pop, the psychedelic intricacy of electronica and all the other moods, vibes and attitudes that Zengineers find at the heart of the tracks, they then transport out of their original contexts, un-originalise them, and blend them with their very own, multi-layered drum’n'bass beats that range from liquid and subtle to cutting and banging.

The result is a mixture that is far more than one sweeping, constantly varying stream of new musical detail and niceties, references and impressions. It is also a piece of applied, audible philosophy: the unique nature of both people and music arises from the ingenious combination of the most different elements from the most different original sources. What creates personality is the synergy of original and originality. Found the connection! The soul is a remix!

Deutsch: “Das Original” und “die Originalität” sind zwei ähnlich klingende, aber durchaus unterschiedliche Begriffe. Der eine beschreibt das Einzigartige, das Ursprungsstück, während der andere den Einfallsreichtum meint. So verschieden die beiden Ausdrücke also auf den ersten Blick scheinen mögen, so sehr besteht zwischen ihnen gleichwohl eine versteckte Verbindung.

Auf ihrem mittlerweile sechsten Album auf iD.EOLOGY lassen Zengineers ihrem Forscherdrang freien Lauf. Akribisch zerlegen sie die Originale verschiedenster Netaudiokünstler von Entertainment for the Braindead über Tracing Arcs und Monokle bis zu Dub One! und einigen mehr in ihre atomaren Bestandteile, analysieren deren vielfältige Wechselwirkungen und begeben sich auf eine Suche nach der Seele der Tracks – ebenso wie der eigenen. Die erotische Eleganz der Salsa, die coole Sehnsucht des Indie-Pop, die psychedelische Versponnenheit von Electronica und all die anderen Stimmungen, Schwingungen und Haltungen, die sie im Herzen der Originale vorfinden, transportieren Zengineers aus ihren angestammten Kontexten heraus, ent-originalisieren sie und verschmelzen sie mit ihren eigenen vielschichtigen DnB Beats von liquide-subtil bis knarzig-krachend.

Die entstehende Mischung ist weitaus mehr als ein mitreißender, sich stetig verändernder Fluss immer neuer musikalischer Einzel- und Feinheiten, Referenzen und Eindrücke. Sie ist auch so etwas wie angewandte, hörbare Philosophie: das einzigartige Wesen eines Menschen ebenso wie das eines Musikstücks beruht auf der einfallsreichen Kombination unterschiedlichster Elemente aus den unterschiedlichsten ursprünglichen Quellen. Persönlichkeit entsteht aus der Synergie von Original und Originalität. Verbindung gefunden! Die Seele ist ein Remix!
